What is the difference between classical and contemporary Pilates?

Classical Pilates is a style of Pilates that aims to stay true to the original work of Joseph Pilates. As much as possible we practice the original exercises and use original equipment where possible to keep the feel and results of Pilates as originally intended.

Contemporary Pilates is often a modified version of the original work which may or may not incorporate influences from other styles and forms of fitness. Where teachers may not have a fully equipped studio or have only learned a partial portion of the Pilates system new exercises are often introduced to make up for those that are not available from the original work.

Do I need equipment to practice Pilates? Technically you do not need equipment. Especially if your focus is mat work. You can still get good results with matwork only. My recommendation if you only do mat work is to add in some additional form of resistance training to compensate for the parts of the Pilates system you are not accessing.
